Wow have I been busy, and I’ve woefully neglected my blog! I’m sorry! The good news is that a flurry of activity is nearly over. In the past 8 weeks I have made a quilt for inclusion in a book due out next year, flown from Maine to Colorado to tape a Quilting Arts DVD workshop (more on that here), written and submitted two articles to two different magazines (more on those when they come out), and written a third but still have step-outs and photography to do on that one. BUT–I am thrilled to share with you that Listen to the Song in The Night has been juried into the this year’s Dinner@8 exhibit, An Exquisite Moment.

<img class="size-full wp-image-8061" alt="Listen to the Song in the Night by Sarah Ann Smith (c) 2013. 24 x 60 inches.
You can read more about the exhibit, here. Last year I was really stumped. This year it was a matter of which quilt to make: childbirth (done discreetly–the mom’s view looking over the sheet over your knees at your newly hatched child in the doctor’s hands), Eli as a 2 year old under the blueberry bush grinning as he munched blueberries, or any of a number of other moments. But then I remembered the whalesong. Best of all, not only did hubby Paul, but so did the boys who were about 5 and 9 (or maybe even 4 and 8). We lived on San Juan Island in Washington state at the time. Our house was about 1/3 mile up from the water and faced the Straits of Juan de Fuca with the Olympic mountains on the other side, 17 miles away. We could see and hear the orcas from our house. The writing on the quilt tells the story:

Cloaked in the sounds of the rustling breeze, the song drifted through the open window as I readied for bed. Not believing my ears, I turned out the lights. Then I began to listen. It couldn’t be, could it? The more I listened, the more I believed. It was the whale song–but above water! How could that be? I ran to the living room and told Paul to come outside and listen. Then we woke our young sons from a sound sleep to hear the song in the night.

We heard the orcas breathe, ripple the water, tail lob, and the thunderous splash of whales breaching. There were so many of them, and they were singing! The next day, still in disbelief, I called the Whale Museum researchers. It was indeed a superpod, a family reunion of the J, K and L pods. They told me many scientists study the whales for an entire career and never hear them sing above water. And we four remember standing on the deck in the summer night listening to the orcas sing.

I knew that I wanted to dye some silk for the water because of the sheen of the sandwashed satin, and found some silk I had dyed for the San Domenico Tableau quilt (here) for Mary’s dress. I used the matte side for the sky–it’s at the top in this picture.

First round with the dye bath. The big piece on the bottom is silk. The others are cottons except for the very top piece which is a silk I dyed earlier.

Then

More fabrics dyed for the project. The cotton on the right is what I used for the back.

I used the blue on the top left in the photo immediately above, but had overdyed it to be darker and more solid, for the top and bottom panels where I would write the story. After all, it is hard to make a picture of something you heard but didn’t really see so I though I’d best add some words! I took some artistic license and added a full moon and lightened the scene just enough to actually make a picture not a large blotch of dark! First, however, I needed to figure out how I was going to write on the cloth.

I knew I wanted to write on the top and bottom panels of blue cotton that I had dyed, but wasn’t sure what method to use.

On the right, you can see assorted lower case “a’s” written with DeColourant (some colored) and assorted tools to apply. I thinned the thick liquid, but then it ran. Not the look I wanted. It’s a great product, but not the right one for this purpose. The top “Disguised” is done in an archivally safe Sakura Jelly Roll pen, but it looks much brighter in the real than in the photo. It was OK, but the Liquitex Ink! (acrylic ink) in white with the “crow quill” dip pen was perfect. The variations in pressure as I wrote gave an almost italic look, so that was my choice.

Next I printed out the text at full size to make sure it would fit and to use as a guide. I was afraid that I would get the word order wrong or space out and misspell something, so I folded the printouts and set them just above the line I was writing, covering up the previous line so I didn’t confuse myself! You’ll see my chalk-lines in the photo; I used SewLine by Moda with ceramic chalk lead which erased like a dream when I was done.

Above you can see how I folded the printed paper so I could follow along, line by line.

Next step was to over-paint some batiks for the mountains. I had a few that worked as is, but most needed to have the batik design muted.

Batik fabric for the mountains. The cloth was over-painted with dark (not sure if I used black, blue or a combination). In the lower part of the photo you can see how I have already cut some of the mountains. I wanted the foothills and coast to be even darker than higher up, where the moonlight hit the tops of the Olympics.

Next I auditioned various fabrics, two blacks for the whales, a gray (which needed darkening) for the thin strips separating the top and bottom panels from the center. I free-motion stitched on the black sateen I selected for the whales with just a stabilizer underneath, then cut a slit in the silk (BIG gulp and holding of breath), then tucked the whale into the opening and hand-appliqued them down.

Test-driving fabrics for this and that.

And finally, the quilting. It went fairly quickly, as it was all blues from palest (which appears white but is actually a pale silvery blue) to nearly black on most of the quilt, with just some gray and deep charcoal for the mountains.

Detail shot showing quilting, moon, and white ink dots for the moon glow.

The exhibit will debut at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach this coming July. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Dinner@8 exhibit once again, and would like to thank our various sponsors over the years, especially Moore’s Sewing Centers, Havel’s Scissors and Mistyfuse (which I use a lot)!

(Who me?!!!!)

Can you believe it? I’ve been to Loveland, Colorado, taped a Quilting Arts DVD Workshop, come home (exhausted but elated) and I can still barely believe it. Yes, I have been “on the set” filming this week. Due out in September as both a download and as an actual DVD (which is wonderful for us who live in the boonies with glacial internet), the working title is “Fused Collage and Thread-Coloring,” a Quilting Arts Workshop from Interweave Press!

The project I used for the workshop is my Tomatoes, Basil and Garlic quilt (No. 1) [there will be 3 versions before I'm done], but the workshop is to teach you how to use your own photo to make an art quilt:

Tomatoes, Basil and Garlic, No. 1, the start of what I will call my Quilting the Good Life series!

My trip to the airport was an omen–a good one–for how the trip was about to go. I mean, look at the beginnings of sunrise as I crossed the driveway to the garage!

4:25 a.m., Tuesday: leaving for the airport in Owl’s Head (near Rockland, maine) just before dawn

It got even more dramatic just over the ridge heading to the coast, at the intersection of Route 105 (the Camden Road) and High Street in Hope:

Can you believe that sky?

The route in was equally stunning. Here, mist rising off the Megunticook River in Camden.

And ten minutes down the coast in Rockland:

And the sunrise over Rockland Harbor, en route to our little airport at Owl’s Head.

I flew Cape Air (maximum of 9 passengers) to Boston, then JetBlue (for the first but not the last time!) to Denver, where I caught the shuttle to Loveland directly to the Interweave studio where I met Helen Gregory and the filming crew. There we set up my materials, hung the quilts, and went over my plans for filming the next day. Congrats to Helen on her promotion to Vice President for Content, Interweave and Martha Pullen, and upcoming move to Colorado!

My DVD will have five segments, so five trays to lay out my supplies which I prepped at home.

And boy did I prep. I had about a month (shorter than usual I think) between my contract and filming date, so I pretty much did nothing but make step-outs, more step-outs, refine, video (to get used to talking to a camera and to time myself), cut/edit, cut/edit/shorten more, etc. For a month. Non-stop.

Make-up, first thing Wednesday!

Interweave has a make-up artist come do you up for camera, as there are special products that make you look right on camera under all those bright lights. I shoulda shot a picture of me sitting at the table looking at the room…it was FULL of big tripods, cameras, and cables and cords EVERYWHERE. Miraculously, I did not trip and break anything or anyone!

<img class="size-full wp-image-8032" alt="Reviewing my notes before getting changed for taping.
Then it was time to get changed and start taping. Then we mostly forgot to take still pictures! But here are some….

Those lights were bright, but sure make things visible and looking good.

I never saw this view, but either Helen or Lauren kindly took this photo for me, which shows the jib camera shot of the table with my project and quilts on it:

<img class="size-full wp-image-8037" alt="The jib/overhead camera view. If you look in the center just above the right corner of the screen view, you can see the overhead camera. Also notice in the backgorund it looks like the quilts are on an angle. They are–that is to offset the perspective angle that happens with the big camera lenses. Fascinating!

Then it was time to go home. Early.

<img class="size-full wp-image-8047" alt="Before I arrived, Colorado hit 80 degrees (F). Then by today it was supposed to be back in the 60s–that’s more insane than our weather!

I’ll spare you the tedium of a crowded plane from Denver to Philadelphia, a smaller more crowded plane from Philly to Boston, the utter hopelessness of Logan Airport (UGH UGH UGH), but flying home on Cape Air is always fun. As we approach the mid-coast, first I’ll spot the Camden Hills:

<img class="size-full wp-image-8046" alt="There are two landmarks visible from the sky from a distance.
Then

<img class="size-full wp-image-8044" alt="The second landmark is the big white tower at Dragon Cement, visible dead ahead in the middle of this photo. I realized on this trip how massively huge the quarry is for this company.

As you near Dragon Cement, we turn right and head for Owl’s Head (Knox County, RKD) airport. The lights of home!

LOVE being able to snap out all windows of these small planes. Landing strip is visible just to the right of the bar up the center of the windshield.

Travel was the usual crowded insanity and waiting, but I was home 16 hours later to son, hubby, cats and dog. Two of the seven are here:

Doggie love is GOOD!

In the past month, I’ve not only prepped this, but THREE articles (more on them when they are close to being published), have a quilt to make in a week, another article to write, then teaching in North Carolina in June and southern California in July, then a quilt to make by August 5. Then I can collapse a few weeks before school begins (how will Eli be a SOPHOMORE already?) and fall teaching in Massachusetts and at International Quilt Festival in Houston. So I HOPE to blog more often, but at this rate can’t promise. I have so much to catch you all up on, pictures from teaching in Florida, Vermont, and Mass….but must be mom, wife, and author first. Stay tuned!

Prologue Alert: I’ll be lecturing for the Silver City Quilt Guild in Taunton, Mass., on Monday evening, then lecturing for the Maple Leaf quilters in Rutland, VT, on Tuesday and teaching Hawaiian applique on Wednesday. Hope to see some of you there! Now on to the regular blog:

The S-word stuff returned in a snit of “no I won’t go” Friday afternoon.

Goodness gracious! First a comment about the weather: no. No. NO NO NO. NO!!!!!!! You see when I went up the driveway yesterday, midday, we were down to a few patches of snow on the north side of the woods (ergo always in the shade). By late afternoon, it looked like this:

Opened the dining room window (no screens up yet) to take this photo this morning at about 6:30. Say WHAT? (what I really said is not suitable for printing on a public blog LOL). Yes, those whitespots are still itty bitty SNOWFLAKES. Snarl!

The weather forecasters said snow first, then rain. Right…that means the snow gets melted by the rain. So what is THIS that I see out the dining room window this morning? NO!

And yes, in April at least SNOW is a four letter word. It is lovely in November, December, January, February, we tolerate it in March because that’s what it does in Maine. On April 13th? NO! Now, on to quilting.

As my loyal readers will have noticed, I haven’t said much lately. Can you say busy? I have four things going, all kinda big and hugely big (at least for me) going, and they are due just about every two weeks from April 8 to June 1, plus add in teaching in Maine in March, Massachusetts and VT this coming week, North Carolina in mid June, and three guilds in Southern California in early to mid July, and I’m basically flat-out busy from now until July 20th! This is good, as I have precious little on the schedule for next year and the year after, so if your guilds want a quilt teacher, my motto (said with a giggle) remains Have paycheck, will travel! (Does anyone besides me remember the tag line from that 1960s TV show Palladin, Have Gun, Will Travel? Daddy loved it.)

So this is what my studio–which is usually kinda tidy because I can’t function in a mess–currently looks like:

Please add the large suitcase with quilts and the small suitcase with clothes to this heap for teaching in Mass/VT next week.

The sewing machine table…with about four things going on on top of it, none of which is sewing (at the moment). Usually the only thing on these tables is the thread in use and my Machingers gloves!

The work table and ironing board. It looks relatively clear on this side because I’m working over at the iron, but the big suitcase was on the floor over there (filled with stuff for next week). Again, usually clear with the drop-leaf down unless a work is in process. Clutter bugs me!

Chaos. Busy. And drat it all, I’m not permitted to tell you about it, at least not yet! But it’s all good stuff, it’s got me working and creating and teaching and all that, but gosh I wish I could share the details.

<img class="size-full wp-image-8026" alt="The third sports season has begun. The airborne kid in red shorts is Eli doing the triple jump. And as always, someone stands up right in front of me….

And (drum roll), Track and Field Season has begun for Eli. The first meet was Thursday at Belfast, and as usual, it was COLD. The breeze comes in off the harbor. The upper 40 degree temps wouldn’t have been bad except for that wind. If I had had a sleeping bag, I would have been sitting in it on the stands! Eli had one race (great last leg, so-so first 3 1/2 laps) but was so cold he couldn’t get going. Did fairly well at javelin despite minimal practice times–the fields have been too sloppy for the discus, shotput and javelin because they’d splash when they land. Sigh. Did well on his triple jump (again without much practice due to field conditions). But he’s psyched, and that’s good! Now I’m off to a full day of quilt guild meetings. Hope to share pics from teaching in Florida and up in Skowhegan, Maine, soon…..

And a PS…WOW. Just looked at my blog sitemeter, and it tells me I’ve had 250,127 visitors from 190 countries over the years! That’s more like total visits not individual visitors, but wow! Thank you all for reading!

My son’s music, to be precise! If you click on this (once the tab opens click on the orange arrow to play) you can listen while you read (and yes, it does seem like the blink of an eye since he was born). Or this, The Piano Song. But first….

My road to the hot place is clearly better paved yet again! At least I have a good excuse: great opportunities–which I am not allowed to blab about yet–seem to have been falling out of the sky at me in mid to late March. I have FIVE “now or sooner” deadlines–well almost: April 8, April 26, May 1, May 15 and June 1, plus another for early August, not to mention teaching stuff for Quilt Festival Houston in Fall and travel teaching jobs to Mass/Vt, North Carolina and southern California between now and early July! That’s a LOT of good luck falling out of the sky, involving a lot of work, writing, preparation, travel and quilting. Quickly. So instead of blogging I’ve been working. A lot. Sorta bad me for not blogging! The pressure is a bit eased today as I have sent off what needed to be sent for April 8th yesterday evening, and with almost all of April to complete the next two items, I am feeling less under the gun. I can’t wait until I can tell you all about it… likely in summer and again in autumn!

Now for the music:

Our son, Joshua (of the quilt, here), is a wonderful musician. He has had the music in his head since at least 4th grade (age 10), and has been writing his own music for a number of years. He asked if I would share his songs with you–how cool is that? He loves heavy metal, and writes what I call “crunchy” (sometimes head-banger) songs, but I have actually come to enjoy them– Gravedigger starts crunchy and gets really cool. And most surprisingly given this affection for heavy metal, he writes the most beautiful quiet songs! I hope to some day make some teaching videos–both free short clips and a longer video to go with that book on bindings and edge-finishes that I never seem to get written–and he has already said I may use his music in my teaching videos!

There is a cool site called SoundCloud where musicians can upload their songs, Joshua (a.k.a. Joshwah) among them. Here is the link to Joshua’s SoundCloud page. Joshua also has a good sense of humor. He has written enough songs to make two CDs (well, he burned two for me! not available for sale at this point): Shear Madness (with face of sheep) and Pandamonium (with a panda). Love it when someone makes Mama laugh!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Thunder Song—there is definitely a quilt in there. One of these days if/when I get some down time, I need to plug my iPod into the dock in my studio and blast this out loud, get in the zone, and start creating!

And he’s been doing some really interesting things with audio clips, then composing music to go with them. Here is V for Vendetta.

Joshua has taken guitar lessons, but is self-taught on the bass, acoustic, keyboard, and drum machine. Basically, if it has strings, he can figure out how to play it. He performs and records all instruments himself. Amazing–it took me about 8 years of piano lessons before I could pick out Mary Had a Little Lamb by ear. The music gene clearly went from Mama directly to Joshua, skipping me! Hope you enjoy this musical interlude!

Hi all, I’m thrilled to share with you news that I’m included in a new book on art quilts will be out by the end of April:

You can pre-order this beautiful book , autographed, from www.marywkerr.com

Yep, I am among the lucky 51 contemporary quilt artists to be included in its 160 pages! You can order autographed copies of the book from editor/author/curator Mary W. Kerr on her website here; scroll down just a bit and you’ll see the link to pre-order.

The “blurb” says: “Accompanied by 270 color images, fifty-one quilters share their love of the craft and encourage others in the field of textile art by offering design and technique tips. Design processes include color play, alternative fiber, threadwork, and embellishments. This book is a great resource for quilt lovers, textile collectors, and design students.”

Mary put out a call for submissions quite some time ago (publication is a lengthy process). I am thrilled not only to be included, but to know that this book is people who may very well not be known to your or just coming to your attention–it’s a new generation. I’ve admired the work of many of those included some for years and am so honored to be included in their company. I can’t WAIT to see my copy!

Just quickly popping in to share a photo ot three before another week evaporates! After returning from teaching in Florida, I left about 16 hours later to attend the New England (High School) Wrestling Championships with Paul and Eli, and since my return from that have been slamming on multiple deadlines between now and March 15th! But wanted to share a photo or two, let you know I haven’t disappeared, and will be back with more. First, the eye candy:

<img class="size-full wp-image-8001" alt="After class Tuesday, my host Betty Jordt took me to Sharky's on the pier for supper.
And a teaser about the class:

And what FUN…. Rebecca H. from Camden is a snow-bird, and she and her friends traveled to Venice from their Florida winter homes to come to my lecture! SO FUN to have familiar faces in the audience! THANK YOU for coming!

As for what I’ve been up to since I last posted, I had a *really* long commute to work last week: flew from Maine to Florida and back so I could spend two wonderful days teaching for and lecturing at the meeting of the Venice Area Quilt Guild. Many thanks to my host and program chair Betty Jordt and the folks of the guild AND some folks who know me who actually came to the lecture! I’ll blog soon!

Since returning on Thursday afternoon, I left within 16 hours to head south to Rhode Island to support two of the members of Eli’s high school wrestling team who made it into the VERY competitive New England Regional Wrestling Championships: to get IN you have to be a State Champion from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island or Connecticut. Talk about stiff competition! Both boys did well and one even placed! It was a great trip but I’m REALLY glad to return home on Sunday. Yesterday was lots of bookkeeping and paperwork stuff, and today was spent researching patents! I have an idea for a quilting tool, and may be dashing off a provisional patent application in the next week before a new law goes into effect on the 16th of this month (ERK). So I’m going to be scarce while scrambling to do something that should take me months and consultation with a lawyer (not to mention a patent search that goes back 120 years), but I’m gonna try anyway. Stay tuned—maybe in a year I’ll have some good news if the provisional application goes through and I can find a manufacturer and funding! (Can you say Kickstarter campaign?)

But in the meantime, I’m looking forward to a couple minutes on the phone and radio tomorrow with the ever-funny Mark Lipinski!

Hi all! I’ll be teaching and lecturing this week in Venice, Florida! My departure was scheduled for today, but due to snow I’m leaving Monday but will be there in time for teaching on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Wednesday evening lecture. Here is some info from the Venice Area Quilt Guild website:

February 27, 2013 regular meeting at 7:00 pm at the Venice Community Center, 326 So. Nokomis Avenue, Venice, FL 34285.

Our regular February 27, 2013 meeting will begin after the special meeting with guest speaker quilt artist Sarah Ann Smith. Sarah’s talk will be “How did she do that?”. There will be a $5 admission fee for non-members. The doors open at 6:15 for socializing and guild business. The meetings will begin at 7:00 pm.

I’m teaching one of my favorite courses to teach: Quilting Design! The one-day class will be held on both days. There are still a few openings, so if you’d like to attend, contact the guild!

If you’d like to read more about the class, go to my classes page and scroll down to “Quilting Design.” The class supply list is also available as a pdf in that description, just click the link. And if you’d like to book me to teach the class, I’d love to do so! The class is best as a 1 1/2 or 2 day class, but can be squeezed into a day with Some exercises you can take to do at home instead of in class (where you get feedback). Hope to blog pictures later in the week!

Seven out of 14 of last year’s varsity wrestlers graduated. The average age of this year’s varsity team is 15—very young for a high school team. We had two seniors, two juniors (one of whom began wrestling in November), nine sophomores (one new to wrestling) and one Freshman (Eli) on the varsity team. At the beginning of the season, Camden seemed poised to have a “rebuilding” year and not be the usual powerhouse team in the state. Prognosticators said Camden would likely end the season at 12th, not the usual 1 or 2 spot. Apparently, no one told the boys and girl of the team.

Camden Hills Wrestling Team 2012-13, State Champions, and new friend and adopted teammate Michael Alvarez (State Champion at 152) of Morse in Bath, Maine–read below to find out why he’s so wonderful.

Twelve of them, including the two boys new to wrestling, qualified for STATES! The team was undefeated in dual meets at 25-0. They won the Class B title at the all-schools (class A, B) Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference. They won Eastern Regionals. At this point, the sports pundits revised their thinking and said Camden would likely finish third, possibly second but not first. Once again, no one told the kids. In a nail-biter finish, Camden beat Fryeburg Academy to win the State Championship 131.5 to 128.5 points…by a mere three points! As coach Patrick Kelly pointed out to the local newspaper, EACH and EVERY kid who wrestled helped win (or not give away) critical points. It was truly a team effort, capped with two State Champions, two runners up, two at third, one at fourth and an ELATED group of kids, coaches, parents and wrestling alums.

The coaches and this year’s graduation seniors, from L to R: Paul Smith and Perry Goodspeed (assistant coaches), Calan Bragg (132-lb and newly minted State Champion), Tia Silverio (Team Manager), Coleman Powers (154-lb and newly minted State Champion), Coach Patrick Kelly and Asst. Coach True Bragg (cousin to Calan)

It is now 4-5 days since the kids won, and I think we are all still floating on air. I’ll share a bit about each of the boys who came home with a medal, a bit about Eli, and tell you about Michael. I don’t think I’ve EVER heard of a team cheering so wildly for another team’s kid to win!

Eli had an amazing year, not only being ON the varsity team as a Freshman, but in making it to States. He is the same weight as Coleman, but Coleman as a senior got to choose which weight class he wanted to wrestle (and frankly he could beat Eli easily so was a stronger component of the team in terms of contributing to team points). That meant Eli had to wrestle up a weight class–and let me tell you wrestling against someone 7+ pounds heavier and older is a challenge. Nonetheless, Eli did really well. If they had places below 4th, Eli would have come in 5th or 6th at States–as a Freshman! WOW!

Eli is in back and in control as he takes his opponent down to the mat to attempt to pin him.

Eli has control of his opponent’s arm, which allows him to turn him over and (in a few moments after this picture) pin him for the win.

And proud papa Paul (and asst. coach) with Eli holding the team’s trophy for the State Championship:

Paul and Eli enjoying the team’s victory.

The team’s success came with every single point scored or not given up to second place Freyburg Academy, including wins and scores from the boys who didn’t medal. Those who did medal, brought extra critical points. Sophomore John Underhill had a couple of matches where he absolutely dominated:

<img class="size-full wp-image-7952" alt="John Underhill is very close to pinning this kid in an earlier match in the day.
Sophomore Jared Gilbert came through and won 3rd in the consolation finals:

The ref is checking as Jared presses his opponent into the mat

Sophomore Chriss Weiss (we’re so glad you’re back in Camden!) took another 3rd for Camden in a talent-laden weight class (126 lb).

Seniors Calan Bragg and Coleman Powers won their first State titles and absolutely decimated the competition. Luckily, I got some great shots of them. Glad I finally figured out how to get the shots before the season was over!

But even with all that excellence, the win for the team title was NOT in the bag. We were leading Fryeburg by only a few points. Fryeburg had two more boys in the finals. If both won, they would win the State title for their team. If one came in second, Camden would win by a slender three points. The second boy won. The first of the two Fryeburg boys was in the 152 pound weight class up against Michael Alvarez of Morse (Bath, Maine). At the KVAC tournament several weeks ago, Eli pointed him out as they were in the same weight class and told me: see him, he’s the one that’s gonna win states. Can I say how ELATED WE ALL ARE that he DID!

The Camden team, parents, and supporters were watching the VERY close match, which changed lead a couple of times, screaming and cheering loudly. Michael won by a narrow margin on points at the end of the third period, and the Camden crowd went crazy! I think every kid on the team and half the parents sought him out to congratulate and thank him. The kids even invited him to join us for a team “victory” photo with the trophy, and he did. Here he is kneeling down in front to join the team as they all give him a round of applause and Coach Goodspeed shakes his hand. And it turns out he’s a really nice kid, too!

So as you might guess by this massive post, we are all SO HAPPY and still floating on air. The kids were amazing–all of them, including the JV members of the team who helped their teammates during the season. The coaches did an amazing job bringing out the best in this young squad. Looking forward to next year–so proud of all of them!

Next, we will return to actual quilting in Hope, Maine!

Several years ago Jenny Bowker, a fabulous Australian art quilter and teacher, moved to Egypt while her husband served as the Australian Ambassador to Egypt. While there, she came to know and love the land, and especially the Tentmakers. In that culture, beautifully decorated tents were used for special events, but with the rise of machinery and the modern era, the art and craft of tentmaking was fading. Jenny was so moved by this beautiful textile art, that she began to share it with the rest of the world. I first read her posts on her blog and on the QuiltArt list. Later, I attended a lecture at the International Quilt Festival in Houston where I sat with tears in my eyes as she shared the appliqued textiles they make and what she has done to bring pride and respect to their art. She has since been able to bring a couple of the tentmakers and many men’s work (the tentmakers are men) to Australia, the United States and Europe where their works sold like hotcakes and impressed many. The quilt above is one of two in Australian quiltmaker Alison Schwabe’s collection (Alison’s website is here). Here is a detail photo:

Detail of the quilt at the top of this post.

And Alison’s other textile:

Egyptian tentmaker’s applique work, in the collection of Alison Schwabe

After the “Arab Spring” that began with demonstrations and protests in Dec. 2010 and continued through spring of 2011, Jenny was involved with an exhibit in the UK; one of the tentmakers–having seen what is going on in our international quilt world from previous exhibits–had broken with the traditional imagery of their craft, and made a piece depicting the demonstrations in Cairo. This was the first personal expression of this sort Jenny had ever seen, and I still get goosebumps remembering when Jenny posted to an internet list that the piece had been purchased by a Museum in England! How utterly wonderful.

AQS then hosted the tentmakers for an exhibit here in the US and published a book about these pieces.

Alison and Jenny have written some detailed information which I will share here so you can follow the links. Thanks Alison for allowing me to re-post your message!

> Subject: The Tentmakers of Egypt – please read at least !
>
> Dear Friends -
> You all know me as a textile and fabric artist – a quiltmaker, an art quilter – however you think of me, you know of my intense interest in things in fabric and thread. Because of this, I hope you will read and find interesting some of the material in this recent email from one of my close friends, prominent Australian textile artist and quiltmaker, Jenny Bowker.
> Jenny spent several years in Egypt where her husband Bob was Australia’s ambassador. When we visited in 2007 Jenny took as to several textile places (in addition to the pyramids, valley of the kings and other wonderful places around Cairo) and we found the time we spent in the Tentmakers' street in the old markets quite wonderful – its hard to describe the marvellous times and experiences there but, as just one indication we had to buy a suitcase to get what we bought there back here! If you are a Montevideo friend please remind me sometime you’re here that you’d like to see the magnificent 2m sq pieces of their art we have in bedrooms on the first floor…
> Jenny’s letter is frankly to explain and support the current appeal for funding to complete a quality full length documentary on this textile art with an ancient heritage stretching back over 800 years… but her words are far more authoritative and comprehensive than mine, and so I am copying her letter in full and sending it to you, hoping that by the time you’ve looked into some of the links, you too will feel able to pledge a small donation (or a large one, of course) to ensure this project goes to completion. To me, the importance of the project ranks up there with films I’ve seen on The Bayeux Tapestry, the quiltmaking of the Amish, the Overlord Embroidery and some of the many lacemaking and knitting traditions.
> I invite you to read what Jenny has written below, and if you are pressed for browsing time to follow links, I recomment the short videos and the pinterest images. And, please contact me if you want further details – I’ve been posting things about int on my facebook page and blog, but you may not be a FB friend or might not follow my blog ( but I hope you will sometime go there for more insights to what I do and what things influence me and my art)
> But, now over the Jenny Bowker., who wrote:
> “The Tentmakers are a group of men in Cairo who make spectacular applique. Nowadays most of what they make is intended for the walls of houses or on beds, but in Pharaonic, early Islamic, and Ottoman times it was intended for the inside walls of tents. With canvas behind it which formed the outside wall, the rich appliqué glowed with light on it, and was intended to amaze visitors to a leader’s tent. Did you know that Cairo was originally called Fustat – which means the big tent? In pharaonic times the tents were appliqued leather, now all the work is cotton.
>
> You can read more text about them here:
>
> You can see pictures of the work here:
>
> You can see a short video made by Bonnie McCaffrey for Luana Rubin here:
>
> And a longer one made by Bonnie as one of her wonderful vidcasts here:
>
> And if you go to my Pinterest board on the Tentmakers you will see a lot of current work – and some that is much older and also some of the truly old tents so you can see how they were used.
>
> http://pinterest.com/jennybowker1/tentmakers-of-cairo/
>
> I think almost the best if Kim Beamish’s Facebook page for the film as he is putting up constant new images, and there is a lot lot of historical input as well.
>
> The art has been slowly dying. Big pieces of cheap, badly registered, printed fabric made in China have poured into Cairo and people buy this rather that the real appliquéd pieces. On top of that disaster – tourism has stopped with unrest for the last two years. Without the work sold in to exhibitions that I have been arranging in other countries they would all be gone by now – instead – stitchers who left are coming back and young ones are learning again. I am thrilled with the progress we have made and very happy with the AQS (American Quilters Society sic )who committed to them for three years. But – it is still hardly documented at all. There is not one piece in the Cairo Museum or even in the Cairo textile museum. The best article I have ever found is in the Uncoverings magazine and there are no books. Older stitchers are dying and no history has been written.
>
> Kim Beamish is an Australian friend who – when I took him to visit the street on his third day in Cairo – picked up the baton I offered and ran with it. He is making a film about the Tentmakers in these difficult times. He has given most of five days a week for the last seven months – or more. He has paid his own way to shows in England, and has had to pay for three more that have not even happened yet in France and two in America. He has become part of the street and the men are used to him and his camera. He has two young children and a wife who works in the Australian Embassy in Cairo. They have to pay a nanny so that he is free to film. He is, like I was, a trailing spouse. He did not choose to live the ‘cocktail parties and bridge’ life, but has chosen to go out on a limb to tell a very moving and necessary story. I know that at the moment he is on the bones of his behind financially and simply cannot afford anything else.
>
> The movie will not be made without funding for the essentials – the long and boring stages when the filming is done and the hard work starts. Editing, top level translation and the rest has to be done by experts and paid for. Please help. Even a little bit from a lot of people will add up to a lot – that is what crowd funding means. The link is now open and working. If he does not get to his total he gets nothing. Kim will spend the month hovering over the site and biting his fingernails.
>
> The work is really special and the film is essential.
>
> http://pozible.com/tentmakers – this is the link to support the Film – The Tentmakers of Chareh el Khiamiah. If Kim Beamish does not get this money the film cannot be made. Even tiny donations will help and big donations will help more. Please.
>
> If you use PayPal it will ask you to preauthorise. It sounds odd but it simply means that when the total is reached the money will then be taken from people’s accounts so it has to be done this way. Kim gets nothing if he does not reach his total and that is the way that Pozible works. He is a bit worried at the moment as only about 29 have helped in three days.
>
> I am hoping a lot of people will have read this far and be willing now to help us. PLEASE send this on to as wide an audience as you can reach. The moment the total is reached the project will be assured. Until then it looks as if it might be dead in the water.
>
> Thank you
>
> Jenny ”
