Double Give-away! Susan Brubaker Knapp!
No…make that a double-double drawing! Several years ago, Susan Brubaker Knapp (website here) and I met online through the QuiltArt list and became internet friends. We FINALLY got to meet in Houston at Market this year.
Our quilty careers have been moving forward (a good direction) on parallel tracks, and we both were published this year for the first time! So we are having a doubly-fun giveaway:
Over on Susan’s Blue Moon River Blog, she is giving away a copy of my book ThreadWork Unraveled AND my Nourish the Body, Nourish the Soul pattern, and here I’ll be doing a drawing for her beautiful Applique Petal Party pattern booklet AND her Pinata Purse pattern! I’ll draw a winner at random from those who post by noon on Monday (oops) Wednesday, Dec. 16. Read on for more enticing details!
Here’s Susan’s full quilt:
Applique Petal Party is an interesting new hybrid: pattern plus booklet with detailed instructions. Inside there are nine fold-open full sized patterns for all 16 blocks and the border, all with clear lines and notes. There is also an 8-page booklet (8 1/2 x 11 inches) including:
- Needle-turn applique basics, with sharp photos clearly illustrating tricky bits such as getting sharp points for stars and leaves
- Making Bias Vines
- Fabric Requirements for the 73 x 73 inch quilt
- Cutting instructions
- Sashings
- Constructing the quilt
- Borders
- Finishing and Quilting
- Binding and labeling; here there are three brilliantly well done photos to illustrate how to do a double-fold bias binding on the ever-challenging scallops. Well, they won’t be challenging any more, because they show clearly how to do them!
Here are two detail photos:
I love that on the back cover there are four small quilts made from a single block in this pattern, but in totally different colorways. If you love the pattern but just aren’t a pink person, these will give you an idea of how versatile and beautiful this pattern is.
Susan’s publisher, C&T, is really leading the pack with innovative publishing and support options. Even on the pattern they invite teachers to use the pattern for classes, and offer support via the C&T website. Here’s a link to Susan’s pattern at www.ctpub.com ; click on the “google preview” for a tease of what’s inside.
Pinata Purse is a fun one to feature a favorite fabric— and you get lots of look.
Just like a Mexican Pinata is covered in fringes of paper, this purse is covered in fringes of fabric. I could see doing a rainbow thing with the fringe, or a colorwash from light to dark…LOTS of fun possibilities. Plus it’s a great shape with a nice, useful pocket across the entire back.
Susan is a quilter and graphic designer who lives in North Carolina with her husband and children. You can purchase Applique Petal Party, or any of her wonderful patterns (be sure to check out the Round Red Barn!), at Susan’s website.
To be entered in the drawing to win Susan’s Applique Petal Party OR her Pinata Purse pattern, visit Susan’s website and blog. THEN Come back here and leave a comment here on my blog telling me something you like over at Susan’s! On December 16th, we’ll both do drawings: Over here, the first number (comment number) drawn will win Susan’s Applique Petal Party , the second her pinata purse pattern! Thanks for joining in the fun,
Cheers, Sarah

OOOH! I love her stuff, and I ordered the Red Round Barn pattern (I love round barns, and am trying to learn more about thread painting, so this is perfect!)
December 7th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Very cool give-a-ways to both of you! I am almost done with a labor intensive applique’ quilt and have been looking around for the next challenging piece. I really like Susan’s “Bohemian Bouquet” and wished I’d been in the contest to win that one!!!
The one in this give-a-way is so cool too. I have also been toying with making a very feminine quilt. I have been dabbling in thread painting for a few years now. I love all the ideas you have.
That purse pattern is sure different from the normal stuff I’ve seen. I might have to check that one out!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Not sure I could pick just one aspect of her website or blog. But if I had to… her current work ‘the orchid’ has me looking forward to seeing the finished prducts!!!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Congratulations to both of you. I love the pinata purse. So many possibilities and a way to use up tiny pieces. And I love her Teach Me to Hear Mermaids singing in the gallery.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:39 am
How clever of you and Susan! I already have my copy of your book but her pattern is enticingly feminine and the purse is awesome! Gotta try for those!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I love all the insects and botanicals, but the one I wish I could see every day is Lepidoptera.
I was super impressed the first time it appeared on her blog. Love the colors.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:00 am
I was absolutely blown away by the detail and use of texture in all of Susan’s small pieces, but the one that stood out for me was “Autumn’s Bounty”. The trapunto & thread painting make the gourds pop right off the computer screen! I also love how she uses acrylics to add even more texture to her pieces.
Thanks so much for hosting the give away!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:10 am
I love love the “purple phalaenopsis” it is beautiful I can’t wait to see it when she finishes it!The purse is very interesting but to me the quilt is the best. Thanks
December 7th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Love her studio and what she creates in that space, I vow to keep me new studio that neat…right!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:59 am
I love everything Susan does!
I have her thread painting DVD, but have’ had time to watch it.
Her Butterfly quilt knocks my socks off, but one problem, I was working on one similar before hers came out, and now I feel like I can’t complete it….oh well Katherine
December 7th, 2009 at 11:02 am
What a great quilt book! It will be lovely done in pink or any color combination.I love the Pinata purse. I thinking of making this one with blue jean fabric for my daughter. In fact, I love these two items so much that I am ordering both today…a Merry Christmas to me.
If I win one of the drawings, I will donate to my quilt guild. (Bear Creek QG)in Keller,Texas.
Happy Holidays, everyone.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:19 am
really like the use of color and the use of techniques.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Wow!! What is not to love? But…I was immediately attracted to her quilt – The Bluest Eye. I am a former English Teacher and I knew even before reading the description that it had to do with Toni Morrison’s book. Love it!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Wonderful! I too can’t pick just one thing that was a favorite, but pushed to a choice, her Pink Phalaenopsis intrigues me to no end. Ah, to be able to do that kind of work!
December 7th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
I love the samples of the fabric paints on Susan’s blog. too cool

I love Susan’s painted pieces and her comments on the Liquitex inks. I will have to try some of those. Her orchid pieces are fabulous.

I have been crazy in love with her bohemain bouquet for a long time. I may just have to take the plunge and go for it! Love the new petal party as well. I would be thrilled to win any of the great give aways! Keep up the good work!

Sarah, Your book just arrived in the mail today so will read it on this snowy afternoon. Love the purse!
December 7th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Thanks for introducing another great artist into my life. I think this is a very clever idea for a give away and now I have a new site to explore. I was entranced by Susan’s picture, wrapped in the quilt–totally charming!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
I loved the Bohemian Bouquet block of the month in Susan’s quilt patterns… I just might have to buy that. Hoping to win your book but if not, I’ll just have to break down and buy it soon.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Love her work and would love to have this book – or the purse pattern, I’m easy!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
CONGRATULATIONS to you both!!!
I’d LOVE to win both of your books….!!!
I have been following Susan’s blog awhile also….I LOVE seeing her use of colour – her flower series is unbelievable!!!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Petal Party in pink is so eye-catching, but showing some friends’ blocks really expands the possibilities. And I was enchanted by how the quilting of Autumn Leaves “completes” the leaves.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Sarah,
I found your website though Susan’s Blog.
I really like your color use and thread painting.
I love Susan’s use of bright bold colors. Her work is very beautiful. Her website is very easy to get around in and loads quickly.
Your quilts “The Boy and the Dragon” and “Christmas Tableau” are my favorites. I love the mood and feeling of these two quilts. The make you feel calm, but draw you in for the story.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
love both books but the applique has my eye. I love your book too.
I love giveaways and never win but have to keep trying. Add me to the drawing please.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
I keep looking at the Pinada Purse, smile, and get this ludicrous but cheerful picture of myself in my head, wearing it as a skirt.

What a wonderful initiative!
I enjoy looking at the quilts at Susan’s website. And her presentation of the workshops made me wish I could join one, specially “Surface design madness”.
Perhaps someday in the future, when Susan is in the oppurtunity to visit Europe?

Of course I admire Lepidoptera along with everyone else! and I also particularly like a piece she did with circles and embroidery a while back. it is SO beautiful! I think she has not decided yet what to do with it but I love it a lot! Thank you for the chance to win.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
I love the fact that Susan has such a variety of quilt patterns. From art quilts to applique to traditional. Not often you see that. Love both books!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Susan has a lovely website. Thanks for introducting it to me. I love the color in her quilts. I loved the Citrus Slices and the Coleus. Actually I was really drawn to most of her quilts.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
This is a brilliant idea you two have devised. I love the Pinata purse and the picture of Susan wrapped in her quilt. So, I leave my name even though the odds are against me, and I yell PICK ME! PICK ME!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I’d never been to Susan’s site before—-thank you Sarah for introducing her to me.

I really love Susan’s work, especially her photo-realistic stuff. The new Purple Phalaenopsis is quite striking. I have already told her, via Facebook, how lovely the Petal Party quilt is. Even though I’m not a huge fan of pink, this quilt still strikes me as just beautiful!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Yea!!! Way to go Sarah! So are you going to be at Paducah this year?? If so, I’m signing up!
Great giveaway since we’ve probably all spent our money on other folks!
December 8th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I love the work both of you do. Susan’s latest orchid pictures are to die for.
I am enjoying your book, about half way thru it right now. You have inspired me to actually do a thread tension sampler with my various threads.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Isn’t it fun to have on-line friends and then meet them in person? I have met a couple of fellow bloggers and it was like we had already “met”. Congratulations on your lovely book. Susan’s description of it was wonderful and I can see it’s full of valuable info. I would love to be entered in your drawing and put that info to use if I win!
December 8th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Susan’s work (as well as yours) is absolutely wonderful. I’m just learning how to applique and Susans book looks so inspiring. It would be an honor to be the recipient of either of your books.
December 8th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Susan’s quilted flower projects are simply awesome.
December 8th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Congrats on your twin books! I visited Susan’s website and was taken with the Red Barn quilt, the purses, and the candy corn wall hanging. What a great site! Thanks for sharing her information and posting about this on your group lists!
December 8th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
What a great giveaway. You’re both to be congratulated on publishing your books.
December 9th, 2009 at 2:02 am
I have to say that I love the homepage and the beautiful Petal Party quilt the best. I like the folksy style of this and some other pieces, and not many people can create a pink quilt and have it be so truly dynamic and wonderful. I am not normally a pink person, but I just fell in love with the quilt. This is definitely a piece I would consider making! Great job and what great community work the two of you are doing to support each other’s books. I just love to see things like this. It is what helps the world to go around. Peace and many blessings, Annie
December 9th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Other than the obvious, the Applique Petal Party (gorgeous) and the Round Red Barn (learning thread painting is on my list of things I want to learn), the Glasgow Rose is my other favorite. Susan is a very talented lady. Thank you for introducing her to us. And thank you for being so willing to share your knowledge with us.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
I would so love to win Susan’s book. I love her website and her beautiful quilts. Now I will be adding your blog to the ones I follow. Thanks for opportunity to win her book.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
How exciting for both of you, congratulations!!! I hope I’m able to find the books locally if I don’t win.
December 13th, 2009 at 12:19 am
I would love to win these prizes! They are just beautiful!
December 13th, 2009 at 1:03 am
I really love her Celestial Quilt. It is so cheerful! I have been looking for something to make for my daughter and will have to consider this one.
December 13th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Petal Party in all its pink glory is wonderfully alive and cheerful; I like the way it shows how traditional and contemporary designs and techniques can be combined so skillfully.
The New Englander in me is drawn to November Leaves and Round Red Barn; the thread work adds dimension which would be so lacking if the motifs were done by my traditional applique techniques.
Susan Knapp’s book appeals to me because of my love of applique and because of my recent foray into machine techniques, which I hope to improve with practice.
Your quilts, Sarah Ann, and those by Susan offer diversity and inspiration to all of us. I am adding both blogs to my Reader feeds so that I can learn and enjoy.
Thanks very much,
Kathleen C.
December 14th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
All of the quilts are gorgeous but a couple of my favorites are Sunflower and Round Red Barn.Thank you to both of you for this wonderful giveaway!!
December 15th, 2009 at 11:09 am
I’ve been reading her blog for years…and really enjoyed when she did Bohemian Bouquet and showed the alternate colorway that her friend did at the same time…
December 15th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
This is my first time reading this blog or Susan’s. I was blown away by Susan’s quilts and have enjoyed reading the blog entries on both sites. Susan had wonderful closeups on how to face a quilt. So many times you read about the technique but the photos aren’t big enough or clear enough to understand the process. Also loved her quilt Rust 1. I will keep my fingers crossed! Even if i don’t win, i feel lucky to have found these sites.
December 16th, 2009 at 10:00 am
I love both books! Thank you for sharing with others!
December 16th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Sarah, I always enjoy your site and blogs. I admire your talent. Now you introduced me to a new site and blog. Like you, Susan has lots of ideas and information. I enjoyed her tutorials. Loved her pinata bag.

I love Susan’s tutorials, so concise and well done. I would love a copy of Threadwork Unravelled. It is on my wish list, but money is tight right now.
Merry Christmas

Thank you for sharing the info about Susan’s site. I found the informaton on Susan’s site to be nicely displayed and the ‘how to’s’ are clearly presented. I’m new to quilting and appreciate when someone is able to share their knowledge in an easy to understand manner, that invites and encourages me to keep trying and keep learning. And I appreciate and value encouragement
I’d love to win and thank you for this fun opportunity.
