Lino Cut Art Quilt for FiberArt For A Cause

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Using the leaf/bud prints from my lino-cutting class with Dijanne Cevaal (link in Reading on left sidebar), I decided to make two quick art quilts (instead of just a small postcard) as part of my donation to the FiberArt For A Cause (FFAC) fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society.

I offered Virginia the choice of pieces (they are each about 11 inches wide by 17 1/4 inches long), and she chose the blue-green one on the left for the auction.  The multicolored one, on the right, will be for sale here on my website after the auction.

The blue-green print is the “positive” image which I shared in this post.  I fused the print to some batik, then quilted the daylights out of it.  Here is the quilt:

The multicolored quilt is similar, but features the “negative” panel where the main motifs (not the background) are cut away.  I was surprised at how much I liked this one, since usually I am enchanted by the lines of the cuts in woodcuts and lino-cuts.

I don’t know about you, but I’m having a BLAST in this class, and hope that my results will lead to a generous donation to the American Cancer Society.  Thanks in advance to all for browsing the FFAC site/auction, and to those who have helped not just this year but in past years, too, to help combat cancer.

Get ready folks…tomorrow is another Tote Tuesday fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and it’s gonna be AMAZING… please visit Virginia Spiegel’s Tote Tuesday page, here.  There are THREE bags of delectables from Karey Bresenhan filled with goodies from her stash, her mama’s, and donations from amazing people around the world.  There are other amazing offers of books, totes, padfolios, artwork… it is just amazing!  Let’s make this an especially successful day!

Next week will be (I think) the last Tote Tuesday, and it will include my donation of a copy of Threadwork Unraveled, a spool of Superior Threads Rainbows in one of my favorite colorways, four pieces of my hand-dyed cloth totalling just over a yard of fabric, and a pair of hand-dyed socks (upside down to each other, AND a piece of artwork using one of my new lino-cuts (more on that tomorrow!).  Stay tuned, and DO surf over to Virginia’s and see if you’d like to bid tomorrow.

Fight Cancer on Tote Tuesdays!

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Several years back, the indefatigable Virginia Spiegel set out to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  Her efforts have taken various forms, in which I’ve been able to participate as donor of both art quiltwork and cash:  fabric postcards and art quilt auctions.  This year, she’s got another great idea:  Totes filled with goodies from various fiber artists.  I’m thrilled to donate a copy of ThreadWork Unraveled, a spool of thread, and a fabric postcard (yet to be made!) as the contents of one of the bags.  The goal is to have bags with affordable-for-most donations as well as a few fancier ones.

Here’s how it will work:

ToteTuesday, a Fiberart For A Cause fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will open Tuesday, February 2 and continue through March.

ToteTuesday will feature themed totes filled with unique, beautiful, and inspiring items from the worlds of art quilting, fiber arts, knitting, beading, mixed media and surface design.

You can expect totes offering original artwork, autographed books, hand-dyed fabrics, gorgeous yarns, beads, handmade journals, fun and useful materials/tools for mixed-media and surface design, online classes, DVDs, and much, much more.

A list of the more than 20 themed totes now in progress is here:

100% of the proceeds will be donated directly to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause. Fiberart For A Cause has already donated over $190,000 to the ACS:
